Hellene was found along the side of the road one night just before a major storm blew in. At 5 weeks of age, she was severely underweight and dehydrated. Most concerning was her eyes, which were utterly swollen shut with infection.
Sponsored by the SPCA, she received immediate veterinary attention, where oral antibiotics, fluids, pain medication, and syringe feeding were initiated. After repeated warm eye compresses, the crusted material, which prevented her eyes from opening, was finally removed. Medicated eye drops, including serum spun from donated blood, were administered every two hours.
Gradually, Hellene’s eyes began to look better and better, giving us hope that she might regain some vision. As the weeks progressed, she showed her remarkable resilience as she recovered and grew stronger. Although there is corneal scarring, she has a vision in both eyes.
Hellene hit the jackpot with Dania, joining her home and clowder of felines on Gabriola Island.
